Pan De Muertos

Feliz El Dia De Los Muertos!

Dia De Los Muertos is a Mexican holiday that celebrates the memories and life of passed loved ones. It is believed that during this holiday the boundaries between the living and dead are broken and families can give gifts to their deceased family to help them on their journey in the after-life. It is traditional to bring food to the families ofrenda, one food specifically made for the holiday is Pan De Muerto. It is a sweet yeast bread loaf decorated and eaten in honor of the celebration of life.


Ingredients

-1/4 cup butter

-1/4 cup milk

-1/4 cup warm water

-3 cups flour

-1 1/4 tsp active dry yeast

-1/2 tsp salt

-2 tsp anise seed

-1/4 cup sugar

-2 eggs

-2 tsp orange zest

-1/4 cup orange juice

-1 Tbls orange zest

-2 Tbls sugar


  1. In a saucepan heat up milk and butter until butter is fully melted.

  2. Combine 1 cup of flour, yeast, salt, anise seed, and 1/4 cup of sugar. Beat in warm milk mixture, eggs and orange zest. Stir in 1/2 cup flour and continue to add flour until a soft dough is formed.

  3. Knead until smooth and elastic. Place dough into greased into lightly greased bowl and cover, let rise in warm place until doubled in size.

  4. When doubled punch then form into a round loaf and place on a baking sheet and cover for another hour.

  5. Preheat oven to 350* F and bake for about 35-45 minutes. Remove and let cool.

  6. Make glaze by combining 1/4 cup sugar, orange juice, and orange zest. Boil over medium heat for about 2 minutes. Brush over bread while it's still warm and sprinkle sugar over it.

  7. Enjoy and celebrate the dead!
